Poetic Obituaries: Salik Lakhnawi [or Lucknawi], nom de plume

of Shaukat Riaz Kapoor, was more than a poet. He straddled poetry, politics and journalism with ease. He drew his inspiration from Karl Marx and Iqbal. His list of friends had poets and authors like Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Subhash Mukhopadhyay, Kaifi Azmi, Ismat Chughtai and Qurratulain Haider and politicians like Hiren Mukherjee and Jyoti Basu. His sharp wit reflected in his poetry.

Even when he was battling ill health and was bedridden in the last years of his life, he retained his wry sense of humour.
