January 8th forum announcement

Dear Poetry Aficionados,

Poetry & Poets in Rags blog

Since the beginning of December, we have been following the case of Mohammed al Ajami, the poet arrested in Qatar for his poetry. Developments in this case have brought it back to be our lead article this week, as the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights is now monitoring the situation. This is followed by links to articles with points of view on last week's headliner, the case of Courtni Webb, suspended from a California high school for writing a poem. Both of these cases are taking place in countries that suppose free speech for their citizens. That this is happening to poets in Qatar and the United States is alarming. We cannot very well come down hard on the thugs running things in China, Burma and Iran, for instance, if the tyranny we are demanding that they eliminate is allowed in our so-called free countries.

We have a big week with lots of superb articles on poets and poetry, some items with terrific new poems and translations, something for most all poetry news and knowledge seekers. You should get to surfing the site. Thanks for clicking in.

Yours,
Rus
